The Motives of a Worm

Worm

This first message was comprised of two posts and a reply that was posted to the Labyrinth newsgroup. I believe it was cross-posted from a Jim Henson newsgroup, because I've never seen the first two messages on the Labyrinth newsgroup.

Ok, i've been wondering about this ever since I first saw the movie. The worm in the beginning of the movie, why is it that he tells Sarah never to go THAT way. Is it because he is afraid for her safety or doesn't he want her to go to the castle to get Toby?

He says this because it's a poorly written scene. She tells him she's looking for the castle, and he tells her to go the other way. After she goes, he says something like "good thing she went that way, the other way would have led her straight to the castle." Wait a minute, didn't she just tell him she wanted to go to the castle? I don't think he didn't want her to find Toby.

Hmm... well, it's been a while since I've seen the movie, but if memory serves, I think she asks the worm "Do you know how to get through the Labyrinth?", and not, "Do you know how to get to the castle?", leaving the possibility for the worm to helpfully misinterpret her. Of course, it could just be that that's how my memory chooses to remember that scene because that's the only way in which it works ;)

That is correct. She never says she's trying to find the castle. The scene logically follows the whole opening about Sarah's poor communication skills. She has still not learned to "ask the right questions" at this point. The worm was trying to be helpful.

and if you need an explanation.....then everything must go!

Do you actually know the psychological profile of a worm? I didn't simply "watch" Labyrinth. I'm a big fan of Jim Henson's creations. I was a faithful watcher of Fraggle Rock to its very last episode.

This scene is simply poorly written. Don't try to rationalize and come up with a reason to excuse its mistakes.

O.K. people. Sarah didn't even mention trying to get to the castle to the worm. All she wanted was a way out of that seemingly endless corridor. The worm told her things aren't always what they seem. When she stopped taking things for granted and found the opening, she started to go. The worm stopped her and told her to go the other way because he knew the castle was a dangerous place. He DIDN'T know about Toby or he might have said otherwise. If Sarah had asked why she should go the other way, it mightn't have taken her so long to get to the castle.

He was obviously miffed at her refusal to come in and meet the missus. He probably wouldn't have told her anyway, given that giant girls who refuse to come in and have a cup of tea are simply not to be trusted, and all worms know that (manual of strange labyrinth wanderers, volume 3, revised).
